Slow and Steady
With busy schedules, short
days, and poor weather, progress has been very slow. I’ve only managed a few
hours each week to work on the farm, but little by little I’m making progress.
Anywhere the bulldozer did work while putting in the driveway
and removing stumps is nothing more than a mud bog. The amount of rain and snow
we have received has kept the water table at a maximum and even during dry days
it doesn’t dry up much.
I have been working on clearing as much as I can, and I
have started clearing the area behind the cabin location that we hope to use as
our orchard. Because we are planting young trees, we would like to get them in
the ground as soon as possible. That means that there is a lot of clearing in
that area that still needs to be done.
Last weekend, with the help of my son-in-law Brandon, we
were able to get a total of eight brush piles burned. This is always rewarding
because it opens up the viewable land and gives a better visual of what we have
accomplished.
We also got two other projects done. The first was to
finally get shingles on the outhouse roof. I still need to get the windows and
door installed but at least the roof is all sealed up and the inside is staying
dry.
The other project was to lay out and stake the location
of the concrete piers that the cabin will sit on. This doesn’t sound like much,
but now instead of pointing to a cleared area and saying “this is where the
cabin is going”, we have something tangible to look at. After we got the stakes
in the ground, the realization of just how small the cabin is going to be
really hit home. It will be bigger then a “tiny house”, but not by much.
As of this moment (always subject to change) the weather
is supposed to be nice for the weekend, so I’ll head back out and keep at
it……….
