Bring On The Power
The days got shorter and with that came
the need to do some multi-tasking. When I was able to work in the daylight, I
spent my time nailing shingles onto the roof. The roof had been under tarpaper,
but I needed to get it shingled so that I was completely watertight.
When it was dark (after work) I went to
work on getting the wiring installed. I hung the panel box and mapped out the
different circuits that we were going to need. One wire at a time, I wired up
the cabin. Often people think that just because a house is small that it means
that there is less work to do. We have all of the same circuits that a large
house would have. The only difference is that the wire runs are shorter. In the
end however, I will have just as many breakers in my panel box as a larger
house would.
As I was getting close to finishing up
the wiring, the power company contacted me. They told me that they had all the
paperwork and that they were going to put in the work order to have the service
installed. This gave me a deadline because I wanted to have them hook the meter
up on the same day they brought the service in. In order to do this, I had to
have my wiring inspected. I was a bit nervous about this, and as it turned out,
for no good reason. The inspector came out and pointed out a couple of very
minor changes (mostly the addition of wire staples in a few areas) and signed
off on the install.
I kind of thought that I would have
been notified as to the day that the power would be hooked up, but that isn’t
what happened. As I was pulling into the driveway I looked over and saw that
there was freshly disturbed dirt where they buried the wire. I got excited, but
what really put a smile on my face was seeing the electric meter installed in
the meter box. We Have Power!
